TEGNA News Websites

Desktop • Mobile

Project Overview

In 2018 TEGNA completed a rebranding effort for all of its local news station's broadcast properties titled T18. The goal of this project was to get station websites up to date with branding for a cohesive user experience. Additionally, there were some modified information architecture needed.

My Contributions

I was responsible for taking a deep dive on existing UI and bringing it up to speed with TEGNA's new broadcast look. I redesigned all UI elements, components, layouts, and a new information architecture for desktop and mobile.

Legacy Website

I began by doing a visual audit of the legacy website design.I found that the old design was clean and organized. but lacked a brand presence and needed a overhaul of it's typography to be more elegant and readable. Unfortunately this project did not include making the site responsive so I stuck to designing within the pre-existing grid for a separate desktop and mobile site.

T18 Brand Elements

The new brand guidelines heavily relied on local photography specific to each geographic marktet. Since a news website typically only displays photos that relate to each new story, I opted to use just the new color palette, fonts, and graphic elements (namely diagonal stripes).

A concept of "day part" colors was introduced in the guidelines.

Initial Design Explorations

Since the layout/grid of the website was not going to change it was decided that the best way to proceed was to visually revamp the existing layouts and components of the websites. I created 3 directions that I called "Mild", "Medium", and "Spicy". I have found that early in the design process that this approach makes it relatable and helpful in narrowing down preferences.

Finalized Design Direction

After a design direction was agreed upon by stakeholders I began a process of getting all of the components into the new look. I created a UI Kit as part of the process.

All major templates of the site now utilize the new UI Kit. Below you can see some new components that have been designed over time.
